If you have been missing one or multiple teeth, you are at risk for progressive bone loss and deterioration (also known as bone resorption). Once bone has been lost, it may need to be replaced to successfully replace missing teeth. At Pikes Peak Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Center, we want to help you restore your smile and oral function. This is accomplished through the use of the latest advances and techniques in bone grafting to achieve an optimal outcome.
Many different bone grafting procedures and techniques may be performed. The type of bone grafting material used is decided, based on multiple factors, but it often is obtained from a tissue bank, which eliminates the need for an additional surgical procedure. Our surgical team examines each patient’s case to determine which grafting option will ensure the long-term health of the mouth or if bone grafting for dental implants is right for you.
What is a sinus lift?
A sinus lift procedure is one of the most common treatments offered to patients who are missing teeth in the upper jaw and are interested in restoring the lost teeth with a bone graft for dental implant placement. At Pikes Peak Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Center, Dr. Michael Kunkel offers the sinus lift procedure to increase the height and width of bone available in the upper jaw, to allow for dental implant replacement of teeth. This procedure can be utilized for some patients who would not otherwise be candidates for implants due to a lack of natural bone in the upper jaw.
What happens during the sinus lift procedure?
During your initial consultation, Dr. Kunkel will perform a thorough oral examination and X-ray evaluation of your teeth and jaws. He will develop a specialized plan for sinus lifting and present you with your options for sedation during the procedure.
Typically, to perform a sinus lift procedure, a small incision is made on the premolar or molar region to expose the jaw bone. A small opening is cut into the bone, and the membrane lining the sinus is pushed upward. The underlying space is filled with bone grafting material. After the bone graft is placed, the incision is sutured, and the surgical site begins to heal. The bone fuses with the patient’s natural jaw bone and dental implants can be inserted into the stronger and more abundant bone. If enough bone between the upper jaw ridge and the bottom of the sinus is available, sinus augmentations and implant placement can sometimes be performed as a single procedure.
With the sinus lift procedure, many patients who were once told that they were not candidates for dental implants placement can now receive implant restoration. If you are interested in learning your options for bone grafting, including the sinus lift procedure, we welcome you to contact our office in Colorado Springs, CO, for an initial consultation with Dr. Kunkel.
