Dental implants consist of a three-piece prosthetic device that replaces both the root and crown of the missing tooth (or teeth): the medical-grade titanium screw, a small post called an abutment, and a custom crown. Regardless of the reason behind your lost tooth, dental implants are a common tooth replacement solution chosen by patients. Patients who are missing a single tooth or even several teeth often discover that they are the ideal permanent replacement choice in Colorado Springs, CO.
What does the procedure entail?
Placing a tooth implant typically involves one or two surgical procedures. The amount of time that the procedure takes varies because each patient’s individual needs vary. In the first procedure, the screw is placed into the jaw bone and naturally fuses to the bone over time. In the second procedure, the abutment is inserted into the screw so that a custom crown can be secured on top. Sometimes both procedures can be completed on the same day.
What are the benefits of dental implants?
- Very similar to natural teeth. They fit into your mouth like any other natural tooth. Unlike other replacement solutions, they are anchored in your mouth, allowing you to function as though your tooth was never missing.
- The most permanent solution for missing teeth. They can last a lifetime if placed and cared for properly. - **Traditional methods, such as dental bridges, typically have a shorter lifespan on average.
- Easier eating, speaking, and maintenance. Like with natural teeth, you can easily chew and bite into your favorite foods without worrying that the implant may slip or fall out (like dentures). And maintenance is easy! You can brush, floss, and care for them just like the rest of your teeth.
- Maintain your natural facial aesthetics. The patient’s teeth look and function just like healthy natural teeth. And patients will avoid a shrunken or sagging appearance that the face experiences when teeth are missing, due to progressive bone loss and resorption that often occurs.
- Protect healthy teeth and bone. There is no need to grind down neighboring healthy teeth to cement a bridge. There is also no need to rely on the strength of adjacent teeth to carry the burden of a bridge. Dental implants also keep the rest of your teeth from shifting and prevents jaw bone deterioration, which occurs when teeth are lost.
Am I a candidate for dental implants in Colorado Springs, CO?
If you are missing a tooth or multiple teeth, they might be the perfect option for you. Although most patients are good candidates, heavy smoking, certain severe health conditions, and some medications may affect whether they are the right treatment for you.
To determine if you are a candidate for dental implant placement, Dr. Kunkel will perform a thorough oral exam and review your health history. You may also need additional X-rays or a 3D CT scan.
